"Blood: A Butchers Tale" is the Cutting Edge!
(Tagline)
"Love is a Grind."
(Synopsis)
This visually inventive and highly stylized film will be the first in the horror genre to have the comic book look and feel of such film as "300" and "Sin City". In addition, the video game "Blood: Butcher's Block" will be released simultaneously. Where the film ends, the video game begins!
Fans of cult vampire flicks will be thrilled to hear that principal photography on Blood: A Butchers Tale is complete. As the next generation in vampire movies, this highly stylized film integrates all the elements that fans of old-fashioned vampire movies love with state-of-the-art technology, making it a fantastic hybrid of old and new!
The film stars Aaron Douglas (Battlestar Galactica, I Robot) as Sam, Kim Coates (Silent Hill, Black Hawk Down) as Andris, Jennifer Sciole (Breaking the F-ing Rules, Ella at Five) as Darcy, Christa Campbell (Day of the Dead, Wicker Man) as Lily, and features Emily Perkins (Gingersnaps) as Lydia.
Blood: A Butcher's Tale, is the harrowing tale of Sam, a simple butcher who discovers that the love of his life, Darcy, is being seduced by a vampire. As he investigates further, Sam realizes his destiny is to become the destroyer of this blood thirsty race. Sam begins a killing spree with the slaughter of his beloved wife, then her blood-addicted lover. Sam then makes it his duty to systematically destroy the remainder of the vampire clan, until he finally hesitates in killing Lily (Campbell), the last of her race. Helplessly. he falls in love with Lily. and learns to respect her desire to be normal. Eventually. Sam must battle with the possibility of repopulating the planet with the exact race he set out to destroy.
Blood: A Butcher's Tale is a multi-textured story, both in narrative and cinematically. Loosely based on the Indian Mythology of the Nataraj, where the dance of Lord Shiva which destroys life, inadvertently creates it. Sam (Douglas) is a melancholy anti-hero who is repeatedly forced to destroy what he loves the most. His profession as a skilled butcher conditions him to the endless repetition of slaughter. In contrast to his harsh environment, Sam is really a loving and gentle man. Yet he slowly finds Darcy (Sciole), the love of his life, fading away, both physically and emotionally. As he investigates the deadly catalyst of her condition, he must dig deep into his heart to decide on the correct course of action.
Simple in thought and execution, yet complex in emotional agendas, Sam chooses a path of vampiric genocide. He pursues a simple objective; destroy those who are responsible for destroying his life. His actions force him to examine the hollow recesses of his tortured soul, until he encounters the final survivor of the vampiric race. Luminescent and pure, Lily (Campbell) becomes the desire and passion that ends Sam's killing spree. As they begin a cautious courtship, Sam responds to Lily's stark but warming demeanor. When Lily reveals her true intent -- to realize an age old prophesy to repopulate and conquer -- the final betrayal sends Sam plummeting into a state of self-sacrifice.
Cinematically, the films design aims to reflect Sam's emotional and psychological state of mind. The filmmakers develop a significant contrast through the film's various locations. The butcher shop is a crimson-infused, blood splattered place of work, where everyone is indifferent to the on-going carnage. It is in Sam's home – his place of refuge -- where he finds the imbalance that sends him reeling. Throughout the course of his journey, and increasing instability, the film skews shadows and backgrounds, as if to reflect the unbalanced behavior of Sam, and his extraordinary situation. This is accomplished by having the majority of backgrounds and environments created through A mix of Miniatures and CGI.
The film is treated in a hyper-realistic fashion. Colors and tones exaggerate reality, creating a lush and colorful artistic palate. Camera angles and aesthetics are comprised of forced perspectives and detailed close ups, accentuating the narrative.
Most important are the performances. The green screen process puts the actors in a "theater stage" environment, and giving the director considerably more time to explore the performances of the actors, and the emotional depths of the characters.
The filmmakers are using leading edge technology to become the first in the horror genre to create a look and feel similar to "300" and "Sin City". The film was shot using the Silicon Imaging SI-2K Camera, which records at higher resolutions than HD, allowing composites to blend stylized graphic and live action elements seamlessly. The SI-2K is the first 2/3" digital cinema camera with 10-bit Cine-Form RAW™ and 12-bit uncompressed 2K direct-to-disk recording. It offers unprecedented image quality, over 10 f-stop dynamic range, a touch-screen interface and IT-friendly connectivity. It is also the first camera to deliver in-context 3D color-corrected "look" visualization, and a complete raw post-production workflow. Ari Presler, Silicon Imaging CEO, says, "The transition to digital cinematography started when George Lucas first shot 'Star Wars: Episode II' in HD... Today, we have completely eliminated the need for film or tape and now offer the ability to shoot at even higher resolutions than HD, edit while each shot is taken, and have a production ready for distribution within weeks instead of months."
PowerUp Studios is developing the video game "BLOOD: Butcher's Block," a 3D first person action horror game for the Windows PC platform. The action begins immediately after the film ends, with ground meat contaminated with vampire blood being consumed at a community picnic, in the idyllic gated suburb of Red River. As the vampire contagion spreads through the population, the player is charged with protecting family members, saving neighbors, defeating legions of blood-thirsty ghouls and superhuman vampires, and ultimately escaping the doomed community.
The player controls Roger Goreman, a resident of Red River, voiced by Alex Zahara (Masters of Horror, Stargate SG-1). Use whatever you can find as a weapon, from firearms to gardening equipment, to defend yourself and your family. Get help from your neighbors, such as a vigilante posse of shotgun-toting PTA members patrolling the streets in a 4x4, and Lydia, the community's tough and sarcastic Goth teenager, voiced by Emily Perkins (Ginger Snaps).
The game developers will run the 'First Blood Design Competition', which invites fans to "be a designer for a day," and submit their idea for a side mission for the game. Game fans have an opportunity to be part of the game and win some fantastic prizes.
The "Blood: A Butcher's Tal" film and "Blood: Butcher's Block" game will be released simultaneously, bundled and/or cross marketed. Pacific Gold Entertainment is also producing a full length graphic novel, soundtrack, and other merchandise associated with the "Blood" franchise.
The film, written and directed by Mark Tuit, is produced by Pacific Gold Entertainment, Inc, RTG Productions, and Handpicked Films. Pacific Gold Entertainment and its producing partners are currently in pre-production on a series of projects in this genre. Not only are the films CGI-heavy thrillers with video games attached, they also being considered for 3-D process shooting.
Hand Picked Films and RTG are handling the rights, and will begin talks with distributors in April/May. For additional information, please go to the film's official website atwww.bloodabutcherstale.com, , or visit the game's official website at www.bloodbutchersblock.com.
